Shakespeare Schools Festival 2011

Tuesday 1 November was another big night for the work of William Shakespeare, as Conisborough College once again took part in the Shakespeare Schools Festival.

RomeoJuliet1This year, drama students from Conisborough College  performed a version of Romeo and Juliet at Lewisham’s Broadway Theatre.

This 21st century version of the Shakespeare play was set in a modern day war.  The audience was bigger than it has ever been, with all four schools taking part, well represented.  As always we looked at a modern interpretation of the play, with characters dressed in army outfits, with scary white and camouflage war stripe make up.

The musical background was a medley of loud and hard hitting songs that reflected the intensity of what was being performed.  The night was hosted by a professional theatre director who remarked on our play – “An exciting show with bags of attitude. There was so much energy on stage and the language had pace and an urgency which was driving the story on.”

The festival co-ordinator sent an email to thank the cast members and remarked; “It was a great show, as we have come to expect from the mighty Conisborough College.”

RomeoJuliet2The production was so successful, we were invited back at very short notice, to perform again on the evening of Friday 4 November to fill  in for a school that had to pull out.  With no technical, or dress rehearsal, the cast took to the stage again, performing the finale piece for the whole festival at the Broadway.

Once again the cast were publicly praised for the ‘raw energy’ of the show and their professionalism in being able to show the play again with only a days notice.  Mr Conn would like to say a huge congratulations to all the cast for such an amazing couple of shows.  The students put a lot of their own time and effort into the show and it made all the difference.  The fine reputation of Drama productions at Conisborough College was well and truly upheld.

I would like to thank Mrs Strong for taking the photos for the show.  We look forward to taking part in the festival next year and hope we have an even bigger turn out!
