CSC1The Conisborough Sports Crew are a group of committed Year 9 students who are given training to help run Sports events for primary schools across the Borough. This helps to support the national 'School Games' sports strategy.

The Crew are currently being trained to assist in a number of events coming up through the year, the first of which was The Lord's Taverners Boccia competition.  Boccia is a disability sport where players aim to propel balls close to a target ball. Two sides compete as individuals, pairs or as a team of three over a set number of ends.  Points are accumulated over the course of a match to find a winner. A ball can be rolled, thrown or kicked.  This event was run in conjunction with Panathlon and gives the opportunity for students with moderate to severe learning difficulties to take part in a sporting competition with a pathway to a London wide final.

CSC3The sports crew completed their training to officiate at this event and were highly engaged throughout the process, asking some very indepth questions which demonstrated their understanding of the rules of the game.

Later in the year the Crew will be leading and organising multi skills competitions, Tri-Golf and Tennis events to name but a few.

Being a member of the Sports Crew is a big responsibility and offers many opportunities to develop personal confidence, organisation and communication skills.  If you think this is something you would like to get involved in or simply want to find out more about, please ask Ms Descombes, the School Games Organiser.

In addition this term, Year 10 and 11 students in the Progress Unit took part in training to run activities at the Lewisham Primary School Multi-skills Panathlon, hosted at Conisborough College on Thursday 9 November.  This was a colourful, fun-filled carousel event for primary students with moderate learning difficulties.  Lewisham is one of the leading Boroughs offering this event.  The students coped with a long day, displaying maturity and commitment.

The primary schools expressed their thanks for all the hard work from our students.  One school emailed:

Thank you! some of our children described this event as: "The best day of my life"

This terms events would not have been possible without the dedication of the students and I would like to express my personal thanks and congratulations to them all for their hard work.  The team will be in action again in February when Conisborough will host the regional plate final in the same event. I look forward to working with them again soon.
