London Transport Museum Depot

E-mail Print PDF

London_Transport_MuseumOn Wednesday 24 February a group of Year 9 students, that have an interest in studying GCSE Engineering in Key Stage 4, had the opportunity to visit the London Transport Museum Depot.

The London transport Museum Depot is were historic vehicles belonging to Transport for London are stored and renovation work is carried out.  This depot is only opened to the public once or twice a year, so it was a real privilege for both staff and students to be able to spend the day having a look around.

Students were able to look at the work taking place on some of the older vehicles, compare the engineering of the older vehicles with some of that on the newer examples and understand some of the ways in which the classic London Route Master was so ahead of its time.

Students were also able to meet with two young engineers from TFL and interview them about what their job entails.

The day was brought to a close with the group splitting into two teams for a challenge involving them in the design of a railway system.  This gave them an understanding of energy transfers and some of the considerations that engineers need to take into account when solving problems.

All in all it was a very worthwhile visit and we hope to be able to visit again in the future.
