The Key Stage 3 curriculum is designed to give students the foundation knowledge and skills needed to succeed at GCSE.  Students typically study in half termly units, making cross-curricular links to enrich their understanding.  Each unit will focus on a specific topic.  Students will be routinely quizzed on their knowledge and given lots of opportunity to write at length, developing subject specific vocabulary to help them sound and write like a subject specialist.

Selecting Options

Towards the end of Year 9, students decide which subjects they want to take for GCSE, but there are also options to take BTEC and other vocational courses.  Some of the GCSEs are compulsory:

  • English (all students study both Language and Literature worth 2 GCSEs)
  • Maths
  • Science (Most students study the Double Award worth 2 GCSEs. Some students take Triple Science worth 3 GCSEs)
  • Personal Social Health and Careers Education (PSHCE) including Citizenship
  • Religious Education
  • Physical Education

The majority of students also study a Modern Foreign Language and either Geography and History.  Students will work closely with their Form Tutor and subject teachers when selecting options.  Parents are invited to Options Evening to discuss subject suitability with staff.
