Come along and learn new life skills, eat more varieties of food, gain greater appreciation of food and most importantly learn that food does not just appear!
The Cooking Club is now in its second year of the national network of cooking clubs, aiming to teach the young people and parents involved to cook 'good food that is good for you'.
During the first year of the Cooking Club, students gained a basic knowledge of health and safety in the kitchen and how to use a variety of Kitchen equipment. They have also learned about measuring ingredience, cutting skills, pastry skills and how to cook healthy food.
During the year they have learnt to cook muffins with carrots, sweet potato and pumpkins, apple crumble - using Bramley's cooking apples or dessert apples. We have roasted vegetables, stir-fried chicken, simmered meatballs and created cheese scones, quiches and biscuits. We have learned the importance of using the tips of the fingers and keeping hands cool when handling pastry mixtures.
A group of students had the opportunity to visit a restaurant call POD food in London. The owner specialises in healthy eating on the menu.
At the restuarant, the students were able to sample the food and were given a guided tour of the kitchen. The owner had set the students the task of creating a healthy drink to go on the next menu.
The Cooking Club was fortunate in recieving sponsorship from the owner of POD Food who also generously donated a selection of fresh fruit and vegetables for the Cooking Club's Parent and Carer's event in June 2010.
At the Parent and Carer's event the students demonstrated their new-found skills to the delight of everyone who attended and sampled the food.
In November, the Cooking Club was awarded its first year 'Let's Get Cooking' accreditation for 2009 - 2010.
Student Comments:
"I like cooking things up from all the different ingredience that we use, and at the end of it all I love eating it. Whan I am older I'd love my own restuarant and cook all the desserts myself" - Year 8 student
"I have a real passion for cooking for myself and others. I hope to be coming to the Cooking Club for a long time to come and eventually, when I leave school, work in my Uncle's restuarant" - Year 9 student
"I think the Cooking Club is a great experience for students as it teaches us how to prepare and chop food in a safe way and we make wonderful meals" - Year 8 student
