Key Stage 3 Science Curriculum Road Map

Course Content:

This course has an emphasis on scientific literacy – the knowledge and understanding that learners need to recognise the impact of science and technology on everyday life.

GCSE Combined Science teaches you the science you need to be a confident citizen of today’s scientific world. Students will study all 3 sciences; Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

You will analyse the kind of science you see in the news, discuss its impact and learn about its relevance to you. You will learn some of the background scientific understanding needed to make sense of science in the news, and you will learn how to evaluate scientific data and information. For example, you will learn about genetics and examine issues such as genetic engineering and stem cell research.

This course gives you two GCSEs. Due to the course now being linear, students will be taught the whole science content over a 3 year period and sit 2 final exams in Year 11. Some transition work for GCSE is carried out in Year 9.

Students will also complete several required practical assessments in Biology, Chemistry and Physics marks go towards the final GCSE examinations. There will be an opportunity for some students to sit triple science depending on their science level, ability and interest. Upon successful completion of the GCSE courses students can also go on to study individual science subjects at A-Level standards.

Examination Details:

AQA all examinations are at the end of Year 11. Students will sit 2 examination papers for Biology, Chemistry and Physics, each 1 hour and 15 minutes long.

Career Opportunities:

Medicine, Nursing, Engineer, Chemical Industry
